From Humble Beginnings to a Permanent Home
The story of Sydenham Islamic Centre began with a simple but important purpose: to provide a place for the local Muslim community to come together for Jumu’ah prayer.
The very first Jumu’ah salah took place in the basement of Brother Kashef Hussain’s shop in Sydenham Road, London, SE26 5QW. What began as a small local gathering would, by the grace of Allah, become the foundation of a growing community in Sydenham.
The initiative began with the guidance and encouragement of Haji Abdul Ahad (Ahad Miah) from Stepney, Tower Hamlets. His support played an important role in helping establish the Jumu’ah prayer and laying the foundations for what we hope will become a permanent Islamic centre for Sydenham.
Since April 2016, Haji Abdul Ahad’s son, Moulana Shafi Uddin, has selflessly led the Jumu’ah prayer and continues to serve the community today.
As the first Imam to lead the established Jumu’ah congregation in Sydenham, his dedication has helped provide consistency, guidance and a place for Muslims from Sydenham and the surrounding areas to worship together.
Alhamdulillah, what started with a small congregation has continued to grow.
As attendance increased, the community eventually outgrew its original space and Jumu’ah prayers were relocated to Venner Road Hall, Venner Road, Sydenham, London, SE26 5EQ.
